Origami for Work

Origami for work Origami for work

Today was my last day at work - I'd served the 3 months notice of my redundancy after working at an architectural firm for just under 18 years. I decided to make some origami models befitting the personalities or interests of the people that I worked with. The night before my last day, I left the origami models on each person's keyboard. Whilst I didn't get a leaving card or a leaving do, it just felt right to me to leave everybody something, in the hopes they might keep their gifts and be reminded that it's better to give than to receive.

If you're intrigued by what some of the models represent, here they are:

Stork with baby: this lady was having a baby in a months time

Spider: this person doesn't like spiders. This one was a bit cruel, but she took it in very good spirits, as she also received the stork

Dragon: I live in Wales, and some of the people I worked with were very, very passionate Welshmen. You'll find the Welsh dragon in the Welsh flag

Surfer: this guy loves to ride the waves, whenever he can get the chance

Chickens: this person keeps chickens

Lady: this person is our receptionist, and had only just joined us, so didn't get a chance to suss anything out about her

Hands with pencil: this person wss quite the artist. Hands are overlayed an M.C. Escher drawing showing 2 hands drawing themselves!

World with heart: this person always took the Mickey out of me for 'doing good' around the world. He was a bit of a moaner and groaner, but never did anything about it. I just wanted to show him that he should love the world he is in, and stop moaning about it

Mickey Mouse: this guy loved going to Disney Parks with his kids

Faces: this guy was the office comedian, but also had receding hair at a very, very early age. If you pinch the sides of the face with red lips, the lips move up and down imitating someone laughing

4 leaf clover: this guy was my boss. He lost a few big contracts, hence my redundancy. 4 leaf clover was to bring him good luck to win some big contracts, so that he can get his life back on track again

Nice article, I like the idea to create something for those people that we love our friend/ cowokers.

    Thanks for sharing.

What an awesome thing to do Mikey! Best way to say good bye and thank you : )

And how are you doing in your new life after the almost 18 years of working there?

To Nefesh + Gerardo: Thanks for your lovely comments. Hardly anybody knew about my origami interest in work, so I'm hoping it came as quite a surprise for them.

To Gerardo: What am I doing now?
Origami I would like to diagram up some of my undiagrammed models. I'm very slow at doing this, so don't expect anything too soon.

Non-origami I've jointly pioneered the microvolunteering concept (look it up on Google) in my spare time around the world, and will continue to promote the concept, including a few origami inspired micro-actions that benefit worthy causes. These can be found here:

Lovely designs, but LESS the spider. It is not for the origami work, it is because I hate them (in live)... (Ok, death neither)
I am sure they felt happy because they are keeping a little bit from you with them.
